Public programs and events

I am Hilda and my Chinese name is Chui Hoi Tung. I come from Hong Kong and am an intern for the History Trust of South Australia, from 17 July to 25 August. I am mainly responsible for a research project on History Festivals, doing a thorough study on history festivals in Australia and around the world, as well as writing some blog posts and enriching the social media content.

I am working at this institution, as part of a placement after joining the “Bloom of Youth Global Internship Programme”, and I had been successfully going through many stages prior to the internship. Studying at the City University of Hong Kong gave me this precious opportunity to work overseas, and it was an unintentional decision for me to join the internship since I already graduated from university in November 2016.

Every placement is tailor-made for every participant, so it really suits my interests and enables me to gain work experience for my future career. I would like to work in the profession of museum management and art administration, having decided this path when I was studying an associate degree in cultural studies.

Interning overseas to work and live in another country is a great challenge for me, because I don’t really love travelling and enjoy stable life in a familiar environment such as Hong Kong. Yet, I still have the courage to step out of my comfort zone for the first time on this intern trip, and it is my first time to leave my family for 6 weeks.

When I came to Adelaide in the early morning on 16 July, I was very nervous while looking for the History Trust, buying the tickets for public transport, and even got lost in the city for several hours in the afternoon.  I felt homesick and bewildered knowing that there are a lot of new things for me to adapt to in this short period of stay. My family has been very supportive and my host family in Adelaide has also been helping me to face this challenge. 17 July was the first day of full-time work at the History Trust and I began to settle down in the workplace.

I am an easy going person having a careful mind and a serious attitude towards life, who is interested in the studies of history, culture and art. My hobbies are related to art, watching films and TV series, drawing, singing, and playing the piano. I possess the research skills especially in the fields of cultural studies and cultural heritage management.

It is a good start in Adelaide for me to learn to be independent, hoping to discover and explore more by myself. Most importantly, I have my first full-time work experience in the office here, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, since I started to accumulate solid work experience late in my degree. I will work hard to complete the internship with perseverance and determination during the stay in Adelaide.
