Celebrating Australia's First Steam Carriage with a Differential Replica

Shearer carriage, original car 1898/99 (Mannum Dock Museum of River History)

Australia's first steam carriage with a differential was built in 1897 by David and John Shearer in Mannum, South Australia. It created worldwide history and an international spotlight on Mannum. See how 120 years later, brothers Doug and Roger Baker created a replica carriage through their engineering and steam prowess - Shearer brothers reincarnated! Discover the history and craftsmanship through interpretation panels, video and artefacts at the Arnold Gallery. The next phase of the replica is operational - a momentous occasion when the replica steams down the main street of Mannum as the original did 100 years ago!
