When Smalls Were Large: 150 Years of Women’s Underwear

When Smalls Were Large

Explore the links between changes in fashion and underwear. How does this reflect the changing nature of women's role in society? Examine the way in which underwear in particular has bound, laced, padded, buttoned and zipped up women’s bodies to adapt to the changing demands of the socially acceptable shape. In this white gloves interactive workshop, participants handle items of historical costume to understand better how underwear has been used to customise the body.
