Learn to Read Your German Family Records
Using examples from Australian Lutheran Church records (baptisms, marriages and deaths), participants will be guided through the core vocabulary and format of church registers to acquire a basic familiarity with the old German handwriting (Kurrentschrift) and techniques for deciphering common terms. A basic knowledge of German, or experience with reading German church registers, is necessary.
The workshop includes an introduction to the individual letters of the alphabet, common points of confusion and to vocabulary relating to names, places, occupations, family relationships and causes of death. A workbook is provided with handwriting samples, vocabulary lists and practice exercises.
Bookings essential by phone/email.
