There Was Movement in the District

Early settlement in the region began as early as 1843 but just how did the settlers get to the area? The climb over the hills would have been a difficult one until construction of a roadway. Discussion of a railway to the region began in 1858 but did not eventuate until 1918. Many of the settlers married at Gawler, and James Phillis ventured to the region via Mount Barker, so family folklore tells us. Discover the hidden history and gain an understanding of transport to the region.
